According to the ancient historian and geographer, Strabo, Skopelos or otherwise known in antiquity as Peparithos – φωτοβολταικα was one of the Magnet islands that emerged from the battle of two giants of Otou and Ephialtes, who were throwing rocks into the sea. According to myth, their fight was the stepping stone in the creation of Sporades islands.
Peparithos son of Dionysus and Ariadne was first inhabited this island, so it got his name. The name Skopelos, appeared later in the texts of Ptolemy.
Skopelos is now considered by many to be the most beautiful island in the Northern Sporades. The capital, Hora, is a traditional village with unique island architecture and quaint cobbled streets, ideal for quiet walks.
On the hilltop above the town, going up the stairs from the church Panagitsa, you’ll find the castle, where you can enjoy the view of the city and the vastness of the emerald Sea.
On this island there are 2,500 churches, monasteries and chapels. Only in Hora of Skopelos there are 123 churches with unique architecture and remarkable paintings, that really worth visiting even some of them.
You never really know a place if you haven’t tasted the local cuisine. Skopelos is famous for grouper stew and meat with clams, as also for a sweet with the name avgato, which is nothing else but a particular variety of plum.
Skopelos isn’t famous for its nightlife, but in reality – φωτοβολταικα σε στεγες it is not much different from other islands.  Bars and clubs open their doors every night, offering a more sophisticated entertainment.
